Introduction

Knoc helps you and your neighbors share security camera footage privately so you can recover stolen property and help local police solve crimes faster. This Privacy Policy explains, in plain language, what we collect from you, how we use it, when we share it, and what you can ask us to delete.

Information We Collect

We collect the information you give us when you sign up, set up your home address, and use Knoc:

Your name, email, phone number, and home address.
Any photos or security camera footage you choose to upload.

Knoc never connects to your cameras directly and never sees a live feed. Any footage on Knoc is footage you uploaded yourself, and only the neighbors you authorize can see it.

How We Use Your Information

We use what you give us to run Knoc:

To create your account and verify you live on your block.
To alert you when a neighbor on your block files a safety report or asks for footage.
To store the footage you upload and share it with the neighbor who asked for it, and with local police, only when you say so.
To understand how Knoc is used so we can make it work better for your neighborhood.

Your information stays inside your neighborhood except in the ways below:

Your name and contact details are visible to your verified neighbors on Knoc so you can coordinate with each other.
Any footage you upload is shared with the neighbor who requested it, and — when you choose — with local police.
We use a small number of trusted vendors (hosting, push notifications, SMS) to keep Knoc running. They handle your data only on our behalf and never use it for their own purposes.
We never sell or rent your personal information. There are no advertisers on Knoc.

Data Retention

We keep your account information for as long as your account is active.

We keep footage you've uploaded until the related crime case is closed, or as long as the law requires — whichever is longer. After that, we delete it unless you ask us to keep it.

You can delete your account at any time from your account settings. Deletion is permanent after a 30-day grace period.

SMS is opt-in and never required. If you give us your phone number, you can choose to receive text messages alerting you to safety reports filed by your neighbors. You can use Knoc fully without ever turning SMS on.

If you do opt in, you give us your express written consent to text you, in compliance with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). You can stop the texts at any time by replying STOP, by turning SMS off in Knoc, or by emailing [email protected]. We don't use your phone number for marketing.

Security Measures

We protect your information the way you'd hope a small, careful team would:

Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Access to our servers is restricted to the people who need it to run Knoc.
We patch our systems regularly when security issues come to light.

No system is perfectly secure, so we can't promise your data is invulnerable — but we treat it like it's our own.

Your Rights

You can ask us to:

Show you what we have on file for you.
Correct anything that's wrong.
Delete your account and the data tied to it.
Stop using your data for a specific purpose.

Children's Privacy

Knoc is for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn we have, we delete it.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

Knoc uses cookies to keep you signed in and to understand how the site is used. We don't use cookies to follow you around the internet, and we don't share cookie data with advertisers — there are no advertisers.

You can manage cookies in your browser settings. Turning them off may break parts of Knoc that depend on staying signed in.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we'll post the new version here and email you. We update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page every time.
